Note: Encouragement To Start One's Iftaar Meal With Dates Or Water

💐 In The Name Of Allah The Most Gracious The Most Merciful
📜 Question: Should the Iftaar be restricted to dates and water, or can one complete one's fasting with another edible and drink (e.g. milk, tea, soup etc.)?
📝 Answer: With whatever is available and easily accessible, but it is better to complete one's fasting with dates, preferably with rutab (moist and soft kind of dates), then with regular dates, then with water. And if the person completed their fasting first with bread or something else then there is no problem with it.
Question: What if they began their Iftaar with something else?
Answer: There is no problem, however it is much better if one starts with rutab if it can be found, or with regular dates. The noble Messenger Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "So let him take the Iftaar with a date as it is a blessing, and if it is unavailable, then let him complete his fasting with water as it is pure." And Anas RadhiAllahu 'anhu said, "The noble Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam would take his Iftaar with rutab dates, and if they were not found then he would take regular dates, and if they were not available then he would take sips of water (as his Iftaar)."

📖 Salman Ibn ‘Amir RadhiAllahu 'anhu narrated: Allah's noble Messenger Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates for they are blessed. If they are not found, then let him break it with water for it is pure."

📖 Anas Ibn Malik RadhiAllahu 'anhu narrated: The Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam would break his fast before praying (Salat Al-Maghreb) with fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates. If there were no dry dates, then with some sips of water.
