📜 Question: Does smiling invalidate the prayer? (If a person is about to laugh but restrains their laughter and smiles instead while praying, do they have to pray again?)
📝 Answer: It (smiling) does not invalidate the prayer. While smiling does not break one's prayer, laughing (or giggling) is among the things which invalidate one's prayer. Laughter with clear sound (that is audible) is what invalidates the prayer. Talking or having a dialogue with others while one is aware of its prohibition while praying also invalidates one's prayer. [So if a person only smiles, without laughing aloud, they can continue praying.]
From the Fataawa of sheikh AbdulAziz Ibn Baz (May Allah have mercy on him. Ameen.)

Some possible reasons why a Muslim may smile while praying:
1] Hearing someone hiccup loudly while saying "Ameen" if praying in the Masjid and in congregation.
2] Somehow noticing someone's toddler standing right in front of you, staring for several minutes and patting your head when you perform Sujood.
3] Overhearing a funny conversation between some children who haven't reached the age yet when kids are obliged to pray (around ten years old or when they have seen the signs of puberty).
